The banking sector is poised to create eight lakh jobs in the next six years, according to a recent study by Assocham, the highest body of the chambers of commerce of India. This will mainly be due to expansion of branches and addition of new banks, says the study. As many as 26 public sector banks are going to hire 50,000 employees in the current fiscal.
The Common Written Examination (CWE), conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) for recruitment of probationary officers/management trainees in participating organisations, is one of the gateways to get into the sector.
Any eligible candidate who aspires to join any of the participating organisations such as Allahabad Bank, Corporation Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and UCO Bank as a probationary officer, management trainee or a similar post in that cadre, is required to take the CWE. Candidates who appear and are shortlisted in the examination will subsequently be called for a common interview to be conducted by the participating organisations and coordinated by IBPS.
IBPS will be conducting the exam on October 26, 2013, and October 27 for selection of POs in 21 PSU banks. Graduates in any stream who are aged between 20 and 30 years are eligible to appear for the exam.
Exam pattern
The exam will be conducted in online mode and will have objective-type questions that need to be answered in 120 minutes. One-fourth mark will be deducted for every wrong answer. “The paper will be of 200 marks comprising five sections — reasoning, English language, quantitative aptitude, general awareness (with special reference to the banking industry), and computer knowledge. While reasoning and quantitative aptitude will be of 50 marks each, English and general awareness will be of 40 marks each. The section on computer awareness will be of 20 marks,” says Ulhas Vairgakar, director, Triumphant Institute of Management Education.

Let us look at the kind of questions that have come in earlier in IBPS-CWE and how one should study for it. “Word formation, data sufficiency, critical reasoning and non-linear arrangement are some of the important topics in the reasoning section. Doing well in this section requires some hard work since it takes time before one can build the requisite skills and speed,” .

In the section on quantitiave ability, there has been greater emphasis on data interpretation as compared to mathematics. “Proficiency in mental calculation will be important to attempt more questions in less time. Memorising tables and regular practice will help you to build speed,” .
The section on general awareness has questions from banking, politics, economy, history, sports and science and technology. While the English section will include questions on reading comprehension and grammar, the section on computer awareness will include questions on computer architecture and software concepts. “You should aim to finish the reasoning section in 35 minutes, quant in 30 minutes, general awareness in 15 minutes, computer awareness in 15 minutes and English in 25 minutes
