Centre Manager – Chennai

Avanti is a social enterprise established in March 2010 to help economically disadvantaged students gain admission to India’s top engineering and medical colleges through an affordable, high-quality educational model. At present, our team has 14 full-time employees and 250 student volunteers at 8 college campuses, and 350 students are enrolled in our programs. Avanti is a PanIIT Alumni India initiative, winner of the Stanford BASES Social EChallenge 2010 and recipient of the Echoing Green and Draper Richard Kaplan Foundation Fellowships 2012.

Avanti’s work in the Chennai Corporation Schools

In 2012, Avanti Fellows worked with 150 students in class XII across the Chennai Corporation Schools to help them develop strong fundamentals in Mathematics, Science, Biology and English and perform well in the boards and college entrance exams. 100 of these students were enrolled in a traditional lecture-based classroom program, while 50 were enrolled in Avanti’s technology-enabled Learning Centre. The Avanti Learning Centre focused heavily on effective self-study, peer learning and frequent testing and used video recordings of the classroom program to deliver content. Encouraged by the success of the pilot Learning Centre, Avanti will operate Learning Centres across 10 Chennai Corporation Schools from April 2013 in partnership with the Corporation. 50 students will be enrolled at each Centre after a testing and interview process designed to test aptitude and motivation.

Overviewof the Role and Requirements

Till March 2013, the Centre Manager will be responsible for executing the student selection process and content development. From April 2013, he/she will manage the end-to-end operations of one Learning Centre. 

We are looking for self-driven candidates with excellent inter-personal and organizational skills and an attention to detail. Strong command over the Tamil language is mandatory. Previous experience in the education/social sector is a bonus.

Roles and Responsibilities

1.

• Administer an aptitude test to selected students across select Corporation Schools

Student Selection

• Manage the in-person review and interview process of shortlisted candidates along with their families

2.

• Conduct video-based classes and effectively supervise the class to maintain decorum and discipline

Learning Supervision

• Motivate the students to ensure productive use of class and computer facilities

• Create an environment conducive to collaboration and peer learning

3.

• Conduct weekly one-on-one review meeting with thestudents to evaluate performance, create customized 

study plans and monitor progress

Mentoring and Guidance

• Counsel the students and their families at regular intervalsto increase student engagement

• Organize doubts-solving sessions with Avanti mentors and teachers

4.

• Administer regular tests (daily and weekly) to help the students structure their studies Testing and Reporting

• Submit detailed weekly reports to the Regional Manager capturing class attendance, performance on tests

and academic focus areasfor each student

Compensation -Rs. 12,000 to 15,000 per month(based on experience and fit)
