National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12 January on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984, the Government of India declared and decided to observe the Birthday of Swami Vivekananda (12 January, according to English calendar) as National Youth Day every year from 1985 onwards.
Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902) born Narendra Nath Datta. He is perhaps best known for his inspiring speech beginning with “Sisters and Brothers of America,” through which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893. The Government of India has decided to undertake the commemoration of 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on January 12, 2013 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan auditorium.
