  The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 13 Research Fellows [05 Senior Research Fellow (SRFs): 05 Junior Research Fellows (JRFs); 02 Technical Assistants (TA) and 01 Project Fellow] (Indian national only) through walk-in-interview(s) on 26th and 27th June 2012. Tuesday, 26th June 2012 (Project #1 to 6)
Project Title, details of position and duration
#1. Evaluation of physiological stress and reproductive potential in reintroduced tiger populations in Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan and Panna Tiger Reserves, Madhya Pradesh.

Duration: Two years.
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/Botany/ Zoology/Forestry/ Agriculture/Environmental Sciences/Geo-informatics with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Candidate should possess adequate experience in (a) field sampling of large carnivore and ungulates habitat evaluation including disturbance parameters and (b) spatial analysis using Remote Sensing and GIS tools.
Description of Work
The researcher is expected to coordinate and undertake field surveys on the reintroduced tiger populations in Panna and Sariska Tiger Reserves and their source sites in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, looking into various habitat and disturbance factors potentially causing variation in breeding successes. The data collection and spatial analysis should be such that the information could be correlated to the stress levels to be measured from scat samples.

#2. Landscape ecology of large mammals in the Shivalik-Terai landscape, with focus on flagship species and ecosystem services.

Prior experience of minimum of two years in (a) Occupancy and camera trap sampling; (b) Knowledge on human-wildlife interface issues and (c) Mapping of landscape variables and spatial analysis using Remote Sensing and GIS tools.
Description of Work
(a) Document the distribution, population and movement patterns of key ungulates at the landscape scales; (b) Understand the ecosystem service with reference to flagship species; and (c) Document the human-interface issues at representative sites in the landscape.

Prior experiences in (a) Radio-tracking of wild animals; and (b) Spatial analysis using Remote Sensing and GIS tools.
Description of Work
(a) Study movement pattern and behavior of dispersing tigers; (b) Undertake landscape analysis of tiger-prey-habitat relationship and socio-economic factors; and (c) Liaison with Forest Officials managing different landscape units on tiger movement and threat potentials. The researcher is expected to be highly motivated and have the ability to work in harsh environment on dispersing tigers in the landscape, involving field sampling and satellite/GSM telemetry technologies.

Desirable Qualification
Candidates with experience in wildlife field research including radio-tracking of wild animals and population estimation methods will be preferred.
Description of Work
The selected candidates are expected to provide technical assistance to the park management, with inputs from WII research team. The work involves radio-tracking, line transect sampling, camera trapping and attending to crisis management.

#5. Management of monkey population using fertility control techniques in and around WII Campus - A Pilot project.

Duration: 1 Year, 6 months.
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Zoology/Animal Science/Wildlife Science/Biotechnology with minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Knowledge of animal ecology, population dynamics, animal capturing and handling and surgical procedures. Preference will be given to candidates having specialization in reproductive biology and endocrinology.
Description of Work
The project aims to develop capture techniques for selectively capturing male and female monkeys and translocation procedure, surgical procedure for carrying out vasectomy in male monkeys and give treatment with vaccine and antifertility drugs to control their fertility. Intraspecific behaviour, breeding activity and population dynamics of treated monkeys will also be studied.
To conduct surveys on monkey populations, capturing and handling monkeys, carry out surgeries on monkeys and blood/tissue analysis work for hormonal assays.

#6. Building Partnership to support UNESCO’s World Heritage Programme in India: Nanda Devi World Heritage Site.

Desirable Qualification
Research experience in carnivore sign surveys, ungulate prey population estimation and monitoring, camera trap deployment and data analysis skills using software.
Description of Work
Under the Research and Monitoring component of this programme, snow leopard, co-predators and their prey have to be monitored through field surveys/studies including use of camera traps.  As this project requires extensive field work in the remote, high altitude regions of the west Himalayan region, only candidates willing to work in such arduous field conditions with poor logistic support are required to apply.

Research experiences in coastal and marine biodiversity. Experience in compilation, analysis and synthesis of research materials.
Description of Work
The study aims to assess the dugong distribution, habitat and risks due to fisheries and other anthropogenic related activities in India. The selected candidate(s) will conduct extensive interview based field works in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Gulf of Mannar & Palk Bay, and Gulf of Kutch region.

Collect vegetation related data from the forested landscapes of Nanda Devi Biosphere. Estimate carbon contents in vegetation and soil. Conduct analysis of soil and water samples in WII Laboratory collected from the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.

Field research experience in the Himalayan region; experience in the field of wildlife survey; Use of GIS and data analysis software, familiar with telemetry.
Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Trans Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions may apply.

Conduct ecological study on breeding water birds especially black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese in Jammu and Kashmir.

GENERALTERMS & CONDITIONS
  1. The walk-in-interview will be conducted at the Wildlife Institute of India, Chandrabani, Dehra Dun (Uttarakhand) on 26th & 27th June 2012. For the projects as mentioned at Sl. No. 1 to 6, the interview will be conducted on 26th June 2012 and for projects as mentioned at Sl. No. 7 to 10, the interview will be conducted on 27th June 2012.
  2. The duration of the projects mentioned above may be extended by the Institute, depending upon the exigencies of work at its sole discretion.
  3. The age of the candidate shall not be more than 28 years for the advertised position of JRF and TA; 30 years for the position of Project Fellow and 32 years for SRF as on 20th June 2012. The Upper age limit for SRF/JRF/TA and Project Fellow may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates  belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.
  4. Selected candidate for the position of Junior Research Fellow will be paid a consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month. In case of NET qualified candidates (UGC/CSIR) for Research Fellows, the selected JRF will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 16,000/- per month and in case of NET qualified (UGC/CSIR) candidates with Professional P.G. Degree, he/she will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 18,000/- per month as fellowship. The fellowship amount for the Project Fellow is Rs. 12,000/- consolidated per month.
  5. The fellowship amount for the selected Senior Research Fellow is Rs. 14,000/- consolidated per month and Rs. 18,000/- in case of NET qualified candidate(s) for Research Fellows (UGC/CSIR).
  6. The fellowship amount for the selected Technical Assistant is Rs. 9,600/- consolidated per month and Rs. 12,700/- in case of NET qualified candidate(s) for Research Fellows (UGC/CSIR).
  7. Selected candidate may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
  8. The selection of the candidate will be based on Walk-in-Interview(s) to be held on 26th & 27th June 2012 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registrations will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards on the dates as mentioned above and as per the positions advertised.
  9. Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.
  10. Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration.
  11. A candidate may apply for a maximum of two advertised positions. Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection.
  12. One way travel expenses will be paid to the candidate, selected for the project. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.
  13. The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
